James C. Armstrong ’39

PERSONAL & EDUCATION:

  • Born 6/12/18 in Minneapolis, MN
  • Deceased 1/23/04 in Kensington, CA
  • Attended schools in Mill Valley, CA and Lowell High School in San Francisco
  • Graduated from Cal with both a BS in Accounting and an MBA
  • Served as an officer in the US Marines during WWII

CAREER:

  • Began his accounting career with Arthur Anderson & Co in San Francisco
  • Established a private accounting practice J.C. Armstrong & Co. in Berkeley, CA in 1949
  • The practice is still being operated by his widow Anneliese Armstrong
  • Worked to the age of 79, always enthusiastically and creatively

SAE VOLUNTEER:

  • Jim and Anneliese handled the books for SAE for nearly a decade during the 1970s
  • J.C. also served on the Housing Corp Board where his wisdom kept the Chapter out of trouble on more than one occasion
  • Hosted the Actives and new Pledges each fall at the St. Francis Yacht Club’s Sacramento Delta facility

FAMILY & PERSONAL:

  • Father of two sons and two daughters
  • Loved sailing which he did well and with ingenuity
  • Member of the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco
  • Everything J.C. did was 110%, there was nothing lax about him
  • Some might say he burned the candle at both ends
  • But he enjoyed every second of it
